"Architecture is Frozen Music" - Frank Zappa
One of my favorite projects from my years at Zervas is the Pickford Film Center. Located in an old, early 20th Century Mission style building, the goal was to create two theaters in a footprint of only 50' x 125'. In addition, there was to be a lobby with a café to encourage early arrivals and staying late. My solution was to install the theaters on one side of the building, back-to-back sharing a common projection room. That left space for a lobby, café and restrooms on the other side of the building. The old brick and pressed tin ceiling was left exposed in the lobby, creating a very warm and inviting atmosphere. This project instantly became the hub of Bellingham's Arts District, and has been recognized with a Mayor's Arts Award. Photography by Rod del Pozo.
